And with that, I’m sucked straight back into the brilliant sci-fi world that is XCOM. Firaxis today announced a full-blown ‘Firaxis-style’ expansion pack for XCOM: Enemy Unknown, titled Enemy Within. Following in the footsteps of Civ 5’s expansions, Enemy Within adds huge swathes of new content, from maps, to mechs, weapons, mechs, armour, mechs, aliens, aliens in mechs, gene splicing, mechs, resources, mechs and MECHS.
The expansion will feature 47 new maps, doubling the number of maps in the base game and will include interesting new variations on the design. In the base game, UFOs only ever landed or crashed in rural areas, for example, but in Enemy Within there’ll be UFO landings in cities and farms. There’ll also be two new alien types. One of them we haven’t seen yet, but the other is a Mechtoid (A MECHTOID! That’s quality naming), which is, as you’d imagine, a Sectoid in a giant mech. Speaking of the mechs – you can build a new facility in the XCOM base that allows you to outfit a soldier with a giant robot suit. They can then use that robot suit to punt aliens miles using a new melee attack. I want all my people to be mech soldiers now.
The weapons include a huge new railgun and laser rifle for the mech and supposedly some more standard fair, but we have yet to see them. There’s also the gene splicing mechanic – by building another facility, one can start incorporating alien DNA into their soldiers. This lets them turn invisible at will, or jump really high, among other things. However, these soldiers appear to be restricted in what kind of armour they are able to wear – presumably to stop them getting too overpowered. To incorporate these new powers into your troops’ bodies, however, you need ‘meld,’ a new resource found around the maps during battle. You have to gather it up before it EXPLODES.
TL;DR: last year’s best game is getting more cool stuff and you should buy the original if you don’t already have it.
XCOM: Enemy Within is due to launch on the 12th of November 2013. I think. There’s a date at the end of the embedded teaser, but I can’t figure out if it’s a backwards American date or a sensible proper date. ANYWAY.
